This week I'm spotlighting Snow Like Ashes by Sara Raasch:
A heartbroken girl. A fierce warrior. A hero in the making.
Sixteen years ago the Kingdom of Winter was conquered and its citizens enslaved, leaving them without magic or a monarch. Now, the Winterians’ only hope for freedom is the eight survivors who managed to escape, and who have been waiting for the opportunity to steal back Winter’s magic and rebuild the kingdom ever since.
Orphaned as an infant during Winter’s defeat, Meira has lived her whole life as a refugee, raised by the Winterians’ general, Sir. Training to be a warrior—and desperately in love with her best friend, and future king, Mather — she would do anything to help her kingdom rise to power again.
So when scouts discover the location of the ancient locket that can restore Winter’s magic, Meira decides to go after it herself. Finally, she’s scaling towers, fighting enemy soldiers, and serving her kingdom just as she’s always dreamed she would. But the mission doesn’t go as planned, and Meira soon finds herself thrust into a world of evil magic and dangerous politics – and ultimately comes to realize that her destiny is not, never has been, her own.
From page 56 of Snow Like Ashes:
Once Angra kills us all, he'll probably reopen the mines.  But as long as we live, it's more valuable to dangle our useless mines in our faces, taunt us and distract us into making mistakes, getting caught, falling into open hands.

  4. I'm still trying to decide if I really really want to try this one, although it does sound interesting. One question: Is Sir referred to as General Sir? :D

    1. Hmmm... I think so, maybe. Honestly I don't remember exactly (even though I just finished it haha). He might be at one point but I'm pretty sure it's mostly just Sir.

  5. I have been following along in this series and enjoying it (as long as I don't think too hard about the world building). The book I am featuring this week is Friday Barnes Girl Detective by R. A. Spratt. It's middle grade but I loved it! Happy reading.

    1. Yeah the world building was a bit hard to get through, I agree. Middle grade is always good! I actually just finished reading one. Thanks for stopping by :)

    1. It was pretty good, though I do think it's a little over-hyped. Thanks for stopping by!
