5 Star Spoiler Review & Discussion: A Court of Mist and Fury (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #2)

Author: Sarah J Maas
Edition: Hardcover
Related Reviews: A Court of Thorns and Roses
Rating: 5 Stars

I did a non-spoiler review of this book, which you can check out HERE if you're interested.  The rest of this review will be hidden underneath the break because, understandably, it's full of SPOILERS for both this book and the previous one.  If you have not read A Court of Mist and Fury STOP READING.  If you have, please continue.

I want to break this review/discussion into three parts, but if you have anything outside of these parts that you want to talk about in the comments, please do! And if you want to have an even longer conversation, DM me on Twitter (@TsundokuSam) and we can talk until I fall asleep!

Part One: The House of What Disappointed Me (do you see what I did with the title there??)
Tamlin disappointed me. Or, more particularly, the way Tamlin and the rest of the Spring Court was treated.  I loved Tam quite a bit in the first book, and seeing him villainized (is that a word?) made me sad. Yeah, he was a misogynistic asshole in the end, but why? He wasn't that way in book one, and maybe that's because Feyre wasn't going to be his bride or whatever, but he really didn't have these same tendencies.  It's another case of character development taking a poor turn (the same thing bothered me in Queen of Shadows).  Similarly, the whole Spring Court was treated as if it were the worst place in the world, and I don't think that's fair.  Feyre was happy there book one, and dismissing it all as a living hell was disheartening.  The past is often as important as the present.  Yes, there's a lot of messed up stuff going on there, and Tamlin is horrible for Feyre, and Lucian should have done something sooner, and I'm really, really glad Feyre got out of there and healed, but it was still disappointing.

Part Two: The House of Rhysand (and the other characters but mostly RHYSAND)
I mean, RHYSAND IS BAE.  Can we be honest?  I love, love, love him.  I adored him in book one but didn't think we'd get a full blown romance between the two (full of sexy times and everything, and some of those scenes were WOW) and that Rhsyand would develop so much.  Where the development for Tamlin was poorly done, everyone else was taken care of with grace, top amongst those being Rhys.  He changes so drastically from book one and it makes SO MUCH SENSE!  I'm a huge fan of where his character went and this alone would have made me fall in love with the characters.

Feyre also endeared herself to me a bit more.  I think it's because she's finally equal (or better) than most of the other characters, where in the first one she didn't seem to have a super strong voice in any regard. At the end, when she's made High Lady, I just kept thinking- Yes, this is PERFECT.  And it was perfect.  I can't wait to see where her character goes (but can you believe it's ending next year??).

Now, Elain and Nesta.  Let's just say I was surprised how much they factored in.  And the fact that they were also made Fae?  I was surprised to say the least.  I'm looking forward to seeing them more in book three.

And the new characters: Mor, Amren, Cassian, and Azriel.  Where to start, where to start?  I think with Cassian.  Poor, precious Cassian who has just lost his wings.  This may have been the saddest part of the whole novel for me.  He's just a doll (and have you read the bonus story? because I bought an extra copy to do just that and adored it!) and he does not deserve what fate has thrown at him!  For Azriel and Mor, I liked them both a lot, and if they don't get together (I ship them so hard) I'm going to be thoroughly angry.  Amren is the only one I'm still not sure how I feel about.  I think because I just couldn't picture her as a character.  On a reread I think it will be easier, because I'll know what to expect.

Part Three: The House of THAT ENDING
I was not ready, emotionally, for the way that ended.  I mean, there wasn't a cliffhanger, which was nice, but it was still really emotional.  I was honestly afraid for a bit that their connection as mate's would be gone forever (thank god it's not!) and didn't know what I would do for a bit.  Besides all the emotions, though, on a positive note, I really liked the chapter from Rhysand's point of view.  I hope in the next book we get to see more of him, because I rather enjoyed it.

So, how did you feel about it?  Did you hate the book, love the book?  Let me know in the comments!

  1. Oooh, I'm so conflicted with this book. >.<

I was never a big fan of ToG, mostly because of Celaena. (But that's a story for another day, lol.) So, I was pretty happy when I read ACoTaR and really loved it. I felt like I could finally say I was a part of the SJM fanclub. But I've never been a big fan of authors writing a whole book (or sometimes more), just to write another about how terrible the original good guy was and have the lead go for another guy. (Yes, I'm looking at you, Shatter Me series. >.>)

I guess in the end, I just feel used. Or like everything that happened in the previous book just didn't matter. Or like the author just did it as a sick joke to put their readers through the wringer. Overall, I just feel like it's a big middle finger.

So, yeah. I bought ACoMaF but I'm on the fence about whether or not I'll read it. If anything, at least it'll have sexy scenes. XD

Loved that you wrote two different reviews for it, though. Spoilery and non-spoilery. ;) I should think about doing that at some point. Eventually. Lol.

    1. Now I'm very curious as to why you dislike Celaena!

I know how you're feeling about the switch like that where it seems they wrote them to be liked when really they were meant to be disliked all along. I was frustrated by how quickly this shift happened, since it pretty much starts on the first page as suddenly very different, and I wish it had been somewhat hinted to in the previous book. I agree, it can feel like being used. I didn't feel that particular way with this book, maybe because I was rooting for Rhys the whole time and wasn't so taken by Tamlin in the first book. In fact, the first one wasn't really one of my favorite's, though I didn't dislike it.

I never finished the Shatter Me series, I only read book one and didn't really like it.

If you do end up reading it, maybe you can view it as a standalone novel, or at least not a sequel, and then you have the first one and second separate. The first, more or less, works as a pretty enjoyable novel! It is a well-written book, and those sexy scenes are very, very sexy (I did not read them in public, LOL).

Yeah, I've been starting to do my most anticipated releases with both types of reviews. It's a way for me to review it regularly and then a way to gush about it in all it's spoiler filled glory! Since I've been reading slowly lately it's worked out well, but isn't something I'd be able to keep up for if I read as I normally do.

Thanks for stopping by! (and sorry it took me so long to respond to your comment! It's been a long few weeks)
