ARC DNF Review: Ashes

Author| Mario Candelaria  Rating| DNF
Edition| eGalley courtesy of Netgalley  Release Date| October 20th, 2015*

*for the record, I'm not positive when this comes out.  According to Netgalley it comes out today (September 22nd, 2015); Barnes and Noble says October 20th, 2015; and Amazon says October 22nd, 2015.
I received a copy of Ashes from Z2 via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I couldn't finish this one, which is probably clear by the giant DNF in the title of this post.  It follows the story of a firefighter who is good at his job but ends up getting seriously injured on one of their calls.  It sounded sad and heart-wrenching, which is why I picked it up (I don't read many things like that).  Unfortunately, it wasn't.

The main character, who's name I can't even remember, was harsh and violent in his personal life, which was most of the book.  His reaction to finding out what happened to him led to him becoming very angry in a vicious way.  I stopped there because I just didn't like him, nor did I connect with him at all.

Unlike most DNF's or books I give less than two stars to, I'm not going to turn readers off of this one.  I think many people will probably enjoy this, and a percentage of all profits actually goes to helping firefighters.  I wanted to like it, and perhaps in a different time of my life, I will.
